Decimal Day: The Introduction of Decimal Currency in 1971

A Momentous Shift in British Currency

In the annals of British economic history, Decimal Day holds a significant place. On February 15, 1971, the United Kingdom underwent a momentous transition from its traditional pound, shillings, and pence system to a decimal currency based on the pound sterling. This article delves into the preparations and impact of this pivotal event.

The Preparations for a Decimal Transition

Years before Decimal Day, the British government began meticulous planning for a smooth transition. In 1968, the first decimal coins, the five and ten pence pieces, were introduced. These were followed by the one and two pence coins in 1969.

To ensure an ample supply of coins, the Royal Mint in Llantrisant struck 2000 million decimal coins. This vast quantity aimed to prevent shortages and ensure a seamless transition on the day of change.
